Earlier this week I was working on a painting that I started several years ago then abandoned, scraped off, started again, scraped off, and began again. I think this might its final incarnation. Here's a little rough detail:
And here's a piece I started a few weeks ago. It's relatively close to being completed. I like her expression--it's as if she's torn between a smile or tears. I think I'll do a little more to emphasize the light falling across her blouse. I like it.
I also have finally come to the realization that I want to paint from life and start using models. I'd probably just take photographs and work from those, since painting directly from a model could be complicated and expensive. And I'd need very specific costuming and hair, etc.
Needless to say, I'm completely broke and couldn't afford to pay anyone and have no idea how I'd go about finding people to model. I'm too shy to come right out and ask a stranger if I could paint her. I can't even imagine how awkward that would be.

the hands are really beautiful, amy. as for the models, do you have any artist friends nearby? perhaps they would be willing to model for free. then you could find out what works for you and get the kinks out before hiring someone.
Thanks Kelly!
I think you're probably on to something--I know several painters who are likely in the same boat. Thanks for the idea!
She is beautiful! I love her plaid shirt. And those clasped hands are so delicate. I can't wait to see the paintings when they are complete.
I love both paintings as is..you have a beautiful way of using light Amy!
I felt the same way with my photography and models. I wound up using people I knew as I was too shy to ask plus I didnt want to spend the money. I think if people saw your work they'd be lining up to volunteer. Perhaps a note at your local art center/college with a link to your work would help recruit models.
Thank you Sarah and Christine! It's too bad we all don't live closer--it would be so much fun to visit each others' studios and peek into all the corners! Or do some sort of collaborative project--I think that'd be killer.
These paintings are beautiful, I love the girl's expression Her eyes shine as if she has tears in them, perhaps she sees someone that she hasnt seen in a while...Im imagining a solider coming up the path...
Lovely as always!~
Thanks Heather! It's always cool to hear other people's imaginings--that sounds like a sweet, but almost bittersweet, story. I need to go visit your blog and see what you've been up to!
I wish I lived closer- I would love to model for you!
