I think I shrieked "Yes!" before the words were completely out of his mouth. He said,"Um, don't you want to see it first? You might want to see it first. It's a bit of a project."
Well, suffice to say, it WAS a bit of a project and consumed me (and my husband) for more than a month. But it's awesome! For a 12 pack of beer I got a huge fabulous dollhouse!
Day One
Ricky and I moved the house into the basement and set up a sort of work space. I started cleaning the house that afternoon. It had been in storage a long time and smelled a bit like mice and must.
The bathroom
A spooky glimpse at the dining room
The attic
The next day I began ripping out torn and stained wallpaper and priming the walls. We have a lot of house paint left over from our own house's renovations and projects, so that came in quite handy.
I had only a month to get the house together in time for Esther's 7th birthday.
Stay tuned for part deux!

oh wow!!
i always wanted a doll's house *sigh*
your esther's a very lucky girl :)
we also have an esther, but she's 13 going on 30...
My grandpa made shadow boxes, kind of a one-room doll house. I still have one he made. And my sister has the huge doll house that he made.
oh wow! what an amazing project! I do love doll houses...that was always my favorite aisle at hobby lobby, I used to love gazing up at all those little houses at the top. I really want to get one now :) I'm waiting for audrey to get a little older so that she can appreciate it and treat it nicely. cant wait to see how this doll house turned out!~
How very exciting! I'll be looking forward to your updates :)
you're a wonderful mother!!!<3 <3
the part where you say you pretended to be a tiny person walking through those rooms reminded me of a dream I had when I was 7 or 8 where I could shrink to walk into a pop-up paper house in a book! I hope to make a miniature book about that dream sometime soon :D
@Claire--I know what you mean. I loved dollhouses as a girl. I guess I still do! If this dollhouse hadn't just fallen in our laps, I don't know how we could have managed to buy one. Even the kits are expensive! And we never see other Esthers (unless they're in their 90's)--that's so cool that you have one! (And now I feel like I'm collecting Esthers; get the whole set! :)
And I don't know if I'm looking forward to having a teenager--you'll have to let me know how that's going.
@Nicole: That's so cool! I'm so glad you guys still have them. I'd love to see them. Working on this house has made me eager to see how other people built and decorated their miniatures.
@Heather: Esther had a large plastic dollhouse that we "retired" when this one arrived. It's perfect for a smaller girl--lots of nice details, but hard to damage. I wish you guys lived closer, you'd be more than welcome to it!
@ Rasamalai: Looking back, it was a lot of fun--like remodeling a real house, but costing just a tiny fraction of that. And I'd never be able to wallpaper or paint a real room in twenty minutes :)
Your book idea is so cool! What an interesting dream--some really great images came to mind when I read that. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
